You have AI everywhere where you have text, with LUWRAIN you have text everywhere

🌟 Computing designed for blind users from the start

LUWRAIN is a text-first computing environment for blind and visually impaired users.

It does not adapt visual interfaces for speech.

It builds applications around text, keyboard control, and spoken feedback from the very beginning.

Everything in LUWRAIN can be read, spoken, searched, copied, and processed by AI.

🚫 No visual interface to decode

Traditional screen readers try to describe interfaces made for sighted users.

Icons, colours, visual layouts, and changing controls must be translated into speech.

LUWRAIN removes this extra layer.

  • ✓ No icons whose meaning must be guessed.
  • ✓ No colour-only notifications.
  • ✓ No visual layouts that become confusing when read aloud.
  • ✓ Every interface object has a clear textual representation.
⌨️ One interface, two ways to access it

LUWRAIN uses a workspace made of text-based tiles.

Blind users navigate it with the keyboard and hear the focused content through a speech synthesizer.

Users with low vision and sighted developers see exactly the same information as text on the screen.

Adjustable fonts and colours make the visual display comfortable when it is needed.

Speech and screen output are always based on the same data.

🤖 AI in the context of your work

LUWRAIN brings intelligent assistants directly into the working environment.

Select a document, message, list item, or text fragment.

Ask AI to explain it, summarize it, translate it, rewrite it, or find the important details.

The assistant receives the current object as context.

Its answers are returned as ordinary LUWRAIN text.

You can listen to them, navigate them character by character, repeat a passage, or copy the result anywhere you need.

🔓 AI without vendor lock-in

LUWRAIN supports different language models and assistant providers through a unified API.

Choose the services and models that work best for you.

Switch providers without changing the way you work.

Your interface stays consistent while your AI tools can evolve.

🧩 A Java framework for accessible applications

LUWRAIN is also a Java framework for developers.

Create accessible applications without becoming an expert in screen-reader compatibility.

Use ready-made components for speech output, keyboard navigation, and text-based screen rendering.

  • ☕ Distribute applications as standard JAR files.
  • 🖥️ Run them on any platform with a Java Virtual Machine.
  • 🍓 Deploy LUWRAIN as a complete GNU/Linux environment.
  • ⚙️ Use it effectively on Raspberry Pi and Orange Pi devices.
📚 Built for everyday work

LUWRAIN is designed for the tasks that matter most every day.

  • ✉️ Reading email, news, books, and documents.
  • ✍️ Writing messages, notes, and long-form text.
  • 💻 Programming and working with source code.
  • 📁 Managing files and directories.
  • 🌐 Using online services.
  • ⌘ Running command-line tools.
  • 🔧 Connecting Java components from Maven Central.
🎯 Not a screen reader

LUWRAIN does not attempt to describe arbitrary graphical applications.

It is not a replacement for visual tools where graphics are the work itself.

It is a better environment for text-centred tasks.

It is computing designed around how blind users naturally consume, create, and explore information.

🏛️ The project

LUWRAIN was started in 2012 by Michael Pozhidaev, Associate Professor of Theoretical Computer Science at National Research Tomsk State University.

It began as a personal accessible Linux tool.

Today, it is a platform for text-first computing, native speech interaction, and practical AI assistance.
